What is Ergonomics?

Ergonomics is the science of designing the workplace, keeping in mind the capabilities and limitations of the worker. Poor worksite design leads to fatigued, frustrated and hurting workers. This rarely leads to the most productive workers. More likely, it leads to a painful and costly injury, lower productivity and poor product quality.

A Good Ergonomic Workplace Can:

  • Reduce costs, by reducing absenteeism caused by workplace related stresses (headaches, backaches, eyestrain etc).
  • Increase productivity, by promoting good posture, less exertion, better reach and less disruptive movement
  • Enhance quality, as performance is improved by better working conditions, and mistakes can be avoided.
  • Heighten morale, as employees notice the effort employers are making on their behalf.
  • Create a better health & safety culture, as a cumulative benefit of the previous points.
